Though the STBL started in Soulard, beginning in 2013 the Tamm Avenue Grill in Dogtown has hosted most of the rolling that isn't done in homes. Fine food and a great beer selection. Check out their menu.

Hammerstone's

2028 S. 9th St, St. Louis, MO, 314-773-5565

Originally called 9th and Russell. Hammerstone's is where the STBL was born. On occasion, it still provides for an excellent outdoor roling venue on their patio, particularly for daytime action when the weather is suitable.

In the Beginning

The Soulard Table Baseball League was founded in 1990. The orchestrator for this face-to-face Strat-O-Matic baseball league was Greg Smith, aka "Smitty". Sometime in early 1990 "Smitty" contacted a fellow who ran SOM tournaments throughout the states in various locations and acquired a database of players who had particpated in tournaments in the St. Louis area.  Using that list, "Smitty" placed phone calls to individuals and found 11 people interested enough to play a 56-game schedule, meeting once a week at a bar in the Soulard area of south St. Louis called 9th & Russell. Those 11 individuals formed 10 teams (two people served as co-managers). Those individuals included current managers "Smitty", co-managers John McGuire and Zach Druckermann, Bruce Helmkamp, Gary Powell, Nick Redell and Chuck Wolter. Also in the group were Tom Bellos, Brian Clar, Steve Gude and Chad Willman.

The STBL (or Stable, as it was called) held the inaugural draft on the 2nd floor of 9th & Russell, presumably in March of 1990. In 1993 Gary Powell's nephew Chris Knobbe replaced Brian Clar. Then in 1996 the STBL added a new manager and two teams and broke into two divisions. Zach Druckermann gained his own team (splitting with J. McGuire) and joining the fold was Andy Menown, an acquaintance from a defunct Strat-O-Matic league (the UIBL)...........................to be cont'd
